An IoT SIM card is a purpose-built SIM card used to connect Internet of Things devices to the mobile network. Unlike regular SIM cards, an IoT SIM is designed for machine-to-machine communication and for handling large numbers of connected devices with high reliability. IoT SIM cards are used in devices such as sensors, vehicles, cameras, solar installations and building systems.
The terms are often used interchangeably, but there is a slight difference in how they are defined. M2M (machine-to-machine) SIM card is the original term and refers to SIM cards used for communication between machines, for example in industrial systems, vehicles or metering equipment. IoT SIM card is a more modern and broader term that includes M2M, but also covers more types of connected devices and systems where data is analysed, visualised and used for automation and decision-making.
