What is eUICC and why does it matter for IoT?

eUICC, or embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card, is the next generation of SIM technology. Unlike traditional SIM cards, an eUICC SIM is embedded directly in the device. The big advantage is flexibility: with an IoT eSIM you can switch between operators and service plans remotely. This means a device is no longer tied to a single operator, but can adapt to whichever network conditions give the best coverage and performance – without a physical card having to be replaced.

Easier management with IoT eSIM

For businesses managing hundreds or thousands of IoT devices, administering connectivity efficiently is essential. With IoT eSIM and its eUICC technology, you can control and update SIM profiles remotely in real time. This allows you to:

  • Switch network providers without physical access to the device
  • Optimise coverage and cost depending on location and needs
  • Minimise downtime when changing operators or during network issues

eUICCs are particularly well suited to solutions that require a long lifespan, geographic mobility and secure data transfer, such as smart cities, energy systems, transport and industrial applications.

Global use

IoT devices using eUICC technology can easily switch between network operators to optimise coverage and cost-efficiency without any physical intervention. This also allows device manufacturers to streamline production and distribution by creating a single SKU for global distribution, which simplifies configuration at activation. By letting devices connect to different mobile networks around the world without changing SIM cards, global connectivity becomes significantly simpler.

Imagine, for example, a fleet of charging stations manufactured in Asia, shipped via a central warehouse in Germany and installed at end customers in the Nordics. With an eUICC SIM, the same device can roll off the production line with a bootstrap profile and automatically receive the right operational profile when it reaches its final destination.

Future-proofing

Mobile networks are evolving fast. 2G and 3G are being phased out in most European countries, while 5G and LTE-M are playing an ever larger role in IoT. With eUICC you can keep up with that development without touching the hardware itself – new operator agreements, new profiles and new technologies are rolled out digitally. This means that an investment you make today will not lock you into an operator choice three years from now, and that devices in the field keep working even when the underlying networks change.

FAQ – Frequently asked questions

What is an eUICC SIM card?
Pil

An eUICC SIM card is an embedded SIM technology where the SIM function is integrated directly into the device instead of being a physical, replaceable card. eUICC stands for embedded Universal Integrated Circuit Card and makes it possible to switch between operators on the same SIM. This is particularly useful for IoT devices that are hard to reach or installed in large volumes.

What are the benefits of IoT eSIM?
Pil

IoT eSIM offers several important benefits for businesses working with connected devices: remote management without physical access, the flexibility to switch between operators and choose the best connection, global use for devices that move between countries, lower operating costs thanks to fewer manual interventions and SIM swaps, a long lifespan thanks to the embedded design, and future-proofing with support for new technologies such as 5G.

Which devices and modules support eUICC?
Pil

eUICC requires the module in the device to be compatible with the GSMA RSP standard. Most modern IoT modules from manufacturers such as Quectel, Telit, u-blox and Sierra Wireless support it, but this varies between models and firmware versions. We are happy to help you verify whether your existing hardware works, or recommend a suitable module for new development.

Is eUICC the same as the eSIM in my mobile phone?
Pil

The technologies are related but not identical. A consumer eSIM in a mobile phone is managed by the user via a QR code and the operator’s app. eUICC for IoT is built for remote management at scale – as the customer, you control profiles centrally in Qubit Control Center without anyone having to touch the device. The underlying standard is also adapted for M2M traffic, with a longer lifespan and greater durability.
