Total cost of an IoT solution: all the hidden fees you need to avoid

Investing in IoT can seem simple – you order SIM cards, hardware and a platform, and then you are up and running. But many companies are surprised when the actual cost turns out to be much higher than expected. Hidden fees for roaming, support, maintenance and data traffic can quickly make the project more expensive than planned. In this article we go through the costs you need to keep track of before you order, how they can differ between industries – and how Qubit helps you avoid the pitfalls.

Start-up costs – often just the beginning

Many providers tempt you with cheap starter packages. But what looks like a low price can quickly grow when you add features such as remote management, security solutions or integration options. Make sure you get a complete picture of the pricing from the start.

Data traffic and roaming fees

One of the biggest traps is data costs.

  • Roaming: If your devices are used internationally, roaming fees can become a significant cost, especially if the SIM cards are not optimised for global IoT.
  • Data volume: Many solutions are sold with limited data packages – and overages can be expensive.

Our tip is to choose an IoT SIM with multi-IMSI or eUICC, so that the devices can always connect to local networks without expensive roaming fees.

Licences and platform fees

IoT projects almost always require a digital platform to manage devices, data traffic and security. But what does the platform cost in the long run?

  • Is it a fixed monthly fee per device?
  • Are there additional fees for more users or API integrations?
  • Are updates and security patches included?

You need answers to these questions before you sign a contract.

Support and service

Standard support may be included, but many providers charge extra for faster SLAs, phone support or a dedicated contact person. If your business depends on high uptime, you should include this in the budget from the start.

Hardware lifespan

Routers, gateways and sensors can have different lifespans depending on the environment. In industrial environments, equipment wears out faster. A cheap router can cost more in the long run if it needs to be replaced more often. Make sure you calculate the total cost over the entire life cycle – not just the purchase price.

Maintenance and updates

IoT is not “buy and forget”. Ongoing firmware updates, security patches and network changes require time and resources. Check whether the provider offers remote updates and central management, so you avoid expensive field visits.

Costs and purchasing decisions differ between industries

An important aspect is that pricing and the decision-making process vary greatly between industries:

  • Property owners and facility management: Here the focus is on energy savings and reduced operating costs. Investments are often made in larger projects (e.g. smart buildings) where payback time and ROI are decisive. The decision-making process is long, with several stakeholders involved.
  • Logistics and transport: Here downtime is extremely costly. The focus is on real-time data and reliable connectivity. The purchasing process is often faster, but price pressure is high because the solutions are to be rolled out on a large scale.
  • Industry and manufacturing: Here security, stability and integration with existing systems are prioritised. Projects may involve higher start-up costs, but companies are often willing to invest more initially to get a solution with a long lifespan.
  • Retail and services: Here flexibility and low monthly costs are most important. It often involves many devices in different environments, where keeping operating costs down is critical.

Understanding these differences is essential both for calculating the right total cost and for choosing a provider that understands your industry.

How Qubit helps you avoid hidden costs

At Qubit we work differently from many other providers. We believe in full transparency in our pricing, so you never have to worry about unexpected fees.

  • Our IoT SIMs support multi-IMSI and eUICC, which means you avoid expensive roaming costs.
  • Our platform is designed to be easy to use and cost-effective, without expensive add-ons for basic functions such as remote management or security.
  • We offer support from Sweden and flexible SLA agreements that match your business needs – not generic packages.
  • We help you choose hardware with a long lifespan and remote management, so that operating costs are kept down over time.
  • Above all: we understand that needs differ between industries – and tailor our packages accordingly.

With Qubit you get not just an IoT solution, but a partner who makes sure your total cost of ownership is predictable and sustainable over time.
