How to choose the right SIM card for IoT

Not all SIM cards are created equal – especially when it comes to IoT. The choice of SIM affects not only connectivity and coverage, but also costs, flexibility and future-proofing. Here we go through what you need to consider to find the right solution for your particular project.

What distinguishes an IoT SIM from an ordinary SIM?

It may look the same, but an IoT SIM is developed to work in many other environments and has features that an ordinary consumer SIM does not have. A traditional mobile subscription for a smartphone is optimised for calls and browsing in one and the same region, whereas an IoT SIM has to handle:

  • constant connectivity over long periods
  • demanding environments (heat, cold, vibrations)
  • frequent communication across national borders
  • remote control and automation

In other words: your choice of IoT SIM card is not just a carrier of connectivity – it is a key component that makes your connectivity smart and scalable.

1. Local, global or multi-operator?

The first thing to consider is where your devices will be used. Will they be stationary in Sweden, or will they move across borders?

For local use:
A SIM with a Swedish operator profile may be enough – but check the coverage on site. Even in Sweden there are coverage gaps depending on the operator.

For global or mobile use:
Here it makes sense to look at solutions with multi-IMSI (multiple operator profiles) or eUICC (electronically programmable SIM cards). The SIM card can then switch network depending on where it is, without you having to physically change the SIM.

2. How important is flexibility over time?

If you are working on a solution that needs to last for several years, perhaps even in different countries and with varying requirements, you should consider:

  • eUICC: Makes it possible to change operator profile remotely.
  • Multi-IMSI: The SIM card contains several ready-made profiles to switch between, depending on coverage or price.

Both options are considerably more flexible than traditional SIMs, but require your router or device to support the technology.

3. What does your hardware require?

Check that the SIM card is compatible with:

  • the network standard your device uses (2G, 4G, LTE-M, NB-IoT, 5G)
  • the SIM format, if applicable (2FF, 3FF, 4FF or MFF2/embedded)
  • remote management – some solutions require the SIM to be manageable via a platform

Qubit can help you match the right SIM with your router, gateway or other IoT hardware.

4. How important is cost control?

SIM solutions for IoT differ not only in price, but also in how they are optimised for different geographical needs. There is an important difference between SIM cards for local use in Sweden and international IoT solutions:

  • Swedish IoT SIMs are often tied to a specific Swedish operator. They are good value for stationary use within Sweden, but limited when it comes to coverage outside the country's borders.
  • International IoT SIMs, which use multi-IMSI or eUICC (eSIM), are built for global use. They can dynamically switch between multiple network profiles to find the best possible coverage, without physical access.

Multi-IMSI SIMs contain several pre-installed operator profiles. The SIM card automatically switches between them based on, for example, price or coverage. It is a cost-effective solution for simpler global connectivity.

eUICC (embedded SIM) is often soldered onto the circuit board of the device and can be remotely programmed with new operator profiles as needed. It is more flexible and future-proof – especially for long-lived installations or if you want to avoid physical SIM handling.

The cost perspective:

  • Multi-IMSI SIMs are often cheaper to buy, but may involve roaming costs or fees per active profile.
  • eUICC may have a higher initial cost, but allows you to download local profiles in different countries – which can reduce operating costs over time.

Our advice: Use Swedish SIM cards for static installations within the country, and choose multi-IMSI or eUICC when you need global coverage, redundancy or flexibility over time.

Industry-specific needs – what does your application require?

Different industries place different demands on the SIM card. Here are some examples:

HVAC (heating, ventilation, cooling)

Requires real-time connectivity for control and monitoring. Data volumes are usually small, but stability is crucial. A SIM with good indoor coverage and fallback works well here.

Elevators and building technology

Require constant connectivity for emergency functions and monitoring. Reliability is paramount – support for dual SIM or multi-IMSI is often required to avoid downtime.

EV charging stations

These devices are often located outdoors or in exposed environments and must withstand large temperature fluctuations and weather. Communication with payment systems and monitoring requires a secure and stable connection – often around the clock. In many cases, charging stations are also placed in car parks or underground facilities, where mobile network coverage is limited or non-existent. To ensure operational reliability in such environments, additional network equipment is often needed.

Qubit offers both hardware and connectivity solutions adapted for these challenging environments – so you get a stable, secure and available connection, even where there otherwise is none.

Smart cities

Manage thousands of devices that often send small amounts of data. Low power consumption (e.g. NB-IoT), low costs per device and simple bulk management are important.

How Qubit can help you

We have long experience of helping companies choose the right SIM solution for IoT. Whether you are running a small pilot project or rolling out thousands of devices globally, we help you to:

  • identify the right SIM type
  • ensure compatibility with your equipment
  • gain full control via a user-friendly platform.
