IoT/M2M router basics

An IoT router differs from ordinary routers in that it is designed to handle the specific needs of an IoT or M2M ecosystem, where reliable connectivity, security and durability are essential.

An IoT router is built to handle continuous data communication between machines and systems. Unlike ordinary routers, which mainly focus on distributing internet to computers and mobile phones, IoT/M2M routers prioritise stability, security and the ability to operate in tough environments. They are used in everything from smart cities and agriculture to elevator technology, EV chargers, solar power and many other industries.

Important features to consider

When choosing a router for your project, there are several factors to take into account:

  • Connectivity: Do you want to use the mobile network (4G, 5G), Ethernet or Wi-Fi? Mobile networks offer long range and good coverage, while Ethernet provides stable connections in fixed environments.

  • Security: An IoT router must have built-in security features such as VPN support, encryption (e.g. AES) and firewalls to protect sensitive data.

  • Durability: If the router is to be used in a tough environment, for example outdoors or in industrial settings, it is important that it is robust enough to withstand weather, moisture and temperature changes.

Step 1: Assess your project needs

To find a router that really suits your needs, you need to start by mapping out a few important factors.

What type of connectivity is required?

If your devices will be in moving locations or in areas without a fixed network, cellular connectivity is a must – and here it is important to choose a router that supports modern technologies such as 4G, 5G, LTE-M and NB-IoT. Older networks such as 2G and 3G are being phased out all over the world.

If, on the other hand, you are building a fixed installation, such as in a factory or a data centre, an Ethernet connection may be the most stable option. For some indoor solutions, Wi-Fi can also be a good complement.

Other factors to keep in mind

  • Data traffic: How much data will the devices transfer? Some projects require high bandwidth (e.g. video monitoring), while others may only send small amounts of data sporadically.

  • Geographical coverage: Will your devices be mobile or stationary? For global projects, you may need a router that supports multiple frequency bands and gives access to multiple operators.

  • Environmental conditions: If the device is to be used outdoors or in industrial environments, it must be built to withstand moisture, dust, extreme temperatures and vibrations. Features such as dual SIM and failover technology ensure that your router always stays connected, even if a network link stops working. If the installation is in a hard-to-reach location, features such as remote management and PoE (Power over Ethernet) can reduce the costs of future maintenance and service.

Think about long-term use and expansion

An IoT project is often a long-term investment. That is why it is important to think about future expansion. Choose a router that can be scaled up, has good remote management and can be updated over time to adapt to new technologies.

Affordable and reliable

Depending on your use, there are many good options. Teltonika, with models such as the RUT241 and RUT361, is popular for installations where affordability is important but you still want reliable failover technology.

Choosing the right router is not just about finding the one with the most features, but also about thinking about long-term needs and the specific environment where the router will be used.
